AAA– Wins NTDP Victory Honda Cup title
The
New Jersey Devils Midget Minor AAA team captures NTDP Victory Honda Cup
title. The Devils faced tough competition in Ann Arbor, Michigan where
the National Team Development Program (NTDP) is based. The devils faced
Team Illinois in game one and came out on top with an 8 to 1 win. Game
2 the Devils faced a tough and driven Pittsburg Hornet team (the Devils
had beaten Pittsburg 3 times this year 1-0, 2-0, and 4-0). The Hornets
struck first and continued to pour on the pressure by adding another goal
before the end of the first. With the Devils down 0-2 a comeback was in
the works as the Devils scored 2 goals in the second to tie the game a
2 a piece. The Devils came out strong in the 3rd and strong goaltending
from Brandon Waldner allowed the Devils to pull away to a 4 to 2 win.
In game 3 the Devils came out flat against the California Wave and paid
for it. The game was a hard fought game and the Wave scored first to take
a 1 goal lead at the end of the first. The Devils would answer back with
2 goals, one of which was a highlight reel goal by Patrick Bursee. The
Wave would answer with 2 goals of their own to take a 3 to 2 win. The
Devils had wrapped up the number 2 seed and would match-up with LA Hockey
Club in the semi-finals. The Devils played down a man for much of this
contest with 12 penalties to 5 for LA. New Jersey was able to face adversity
and score one shorthanded goal and 2 at even strength for a big 3 to 1
win. In the finals the Devils would face the host Victory Honda team.
The Devils came out strong in the first scoring twice and taking a 2-o
lead. Michael Garlasco first goal of the tournament would prove to be
the game winner. The devils were shorthanded for the last few minutes
but were able to hold off the Honda team to take the title. The NTDP staff
chooses two MVP’s and both were Devils, Nick passintino and Garret
Beckwith were honored with the award of co-MVP. It was a great trip by
all. The Devils Midget Minor AAA team has won all 3 tournaments it has
entered this year and sets it hopes on returning to the USA Nationals.
